I would like to draw some attention to the trench coat Barney wore at the end of 8.06 "Splitsville", during his speech about loving Robin (so that she could have an excuse for breaking up with Nick, as he justified).
This is the EXACT SAME COAT he is wearing on the rooftop scene in 8.11/8.12, as he proposes to Robin. (Screencap from promo, found on Tumblr).
Interestingly enough, he is proclaiming his love for Robin both times whilst wearing the trenchcoat - the first time is played off as merely an act (or a "play", as he would call it), and the second time is speculated to be during his play, The Robin. However, underneath it all, the proclaimation of love both times is genuine.
Interestingly enough, ROBIN also has a trenchcoat that is really similar in design, which she wears in "Lobster Crawl" as she turns up to Barney's house in lingerie:
As you can see, the colour and the buttons on both trench coats are pretty much identical. A few days ago, there was an article specifically about the costume design of the characters, so I'd like to think that the similarity between the trench coats is a deliberate act on the writers' part.
What are your thoughts on its symbolism?
